Non classé - 26 juil 2011When the Boston Celtics selected forward Abdel Nader out of Iowa State with the 58th pick, their sixth and final selection, the chances of seeing him in a Celtics uniform this season were slim.
Not much has changed since draft night for the Celtics, who selected Nader with the intention of stashing him in the D League and not taking up a roster spot for 2016 17. The only thing that has seemed to change is the stance on the issue taken by Nader’s representatives.
According to Adam Himmelsbach of the Boston Globe, Nader’s agent is balking at his client going to the D League immediately and would like him to sign an NBA contract. Himmelsbach writes that prior to the draft, citing league sources, Nader had agreed to decline the tender and become a “domestic draft and stash” in the D League, thus allowing the Celtics to retain his rights.
A strong showing in Summer League has opened up some options for Nader, and his agent is pushing for an NBA deal for the 6 foot 6 forward. If Nader accepts the tender offer, typically a league minimum non guaranteed salary, he would attempt to make the Celtics roster in training camp.
The Celtics have 18 players on the roster without Nader, including 16 guaranteed contracts, and also one partially guaranteed contract (Ben Bentil) and a non guaranteed contract (John Holland). Barring a trade, the chances of Nader making the roster are remote, as the team will struggle to cut to 15.
