1AD getting new commanding general

Fort Bliss and the 1st Armored Division will be getting a new commanding general sometime in the near future.

Maj. Gen. Robert P.

Retired Maj. Gen. Pittard, who commanded Fort Bliss from July 2010 to May 2013, said that Fort Bliss is getting a “great officer and a great person.”

“He has a lot of history with the 1st Armored Division,” Pittard said.

A new job for current commanding general Maj. Gen. Stephen M. Twitty has not been announced, nor has a date for a change of command been set, Fort Bliss officials said.

Twitty called White “an outstanding officer and friend.”

“I congratulate him on his selection and I can’t think of a better person to command the 1st Armored Division and Fort Bliss,” Twitty said in an emailed statement.

Twitty has been the commanding general for Fort Bliss and the 1st Armored Division since August 2014. The typical command position lasts about two years. The Army tends to have its leaders and soldiers change jobs and installationsin late spring and throughout the summer.

Since September, White has served as the deputy chief of staff for operations, plans and training with Forces Command, which is the largest command in the Army and arguably one of its most important. Forces Command oversees readiness, training and making sure that the Army and its units are ready to deploy anywhere in the world.

White is doing the same job that Twitty had before taking command at Fort Bliss nearly two years ago.

In his current job, White has been responsible for the “training, mobilization, strategic movement, reset and transformation” of Army forces and making sure that these forces “provide relevant and ready land power for combatant commanders” all over the world, according to a statement from Forces Command.pandora charms

White has previous ties to the 1st Armored Division when it was in Germany. Most notably, he served as commander of the 2nd Brigade while it was in Germany and when it was deployed in Iraq from June 2007 to July 2009. Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; and executive officer to the commanding general at Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, Va.

When the 1st Armored Division was in Germany, White also served as a company commander, battalion commander and assistant chief of staff for the division. Rep. Beto O’Rourke, D El Paso, noted that White has been assigned to the 1st Armored Division four times previously.

And this will be his “most important assignment with Old Ironsides,” O’Rourke said in an email.

“I look forward to working with him in his new role,” O’Rourke added.

White has never served at Fort Bliss before, said Richard Dayoub, president and chief executive officer for the Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce.

“I have never met him, but I have heard great things about him,” Dayoub said. “We are looking forward to meeting him, getting to know him and also providing him with the opportunity to know we are there to support him, much like we have done with General Twitty and his predecessors.”
